The Future of CFB in South Carolina

As we enter the 2023 College Football Season, the gap between the top schools in South Carolina begins to narrow. Clemson and South Carolina look to be trending in opposite directions the last few years despite another ACC title from Clemson.

Clemson has begun to show cracks in the foundation under Dabo Swinney after tallying three losses in each of the last two seasons. While three-loss seasons aren't a negative for most CFB programs, Swinney has set a standard for championships or bust.

Quarterback play at Clemson has taken a complete 180 in the transition from Trevor Lawrance to DJ Uiagalelei, but the defense has also taken a dip in performance. Uiagalelei has since transferred to Oregon State in an attempt to reset his career.

Are the Tigers a QB away from a return to dominance?

Dabo sure hopes so. Returning quarterback Cade Klubnik is a 5-Star recruit and the former No. 1 quarterback of his class. The Tigers felt like they showcased enough of his talent in 2022 and are very excited about his future. Klubnik according to 247Sports is college football's next superstar.

Shane Beamer seems to be powered by his 2021 Duke's Mayo Bowl-fueled success. It could also be the stellar quarterback play from former 5-Star and Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler.

Rattler threw for 3,026 yards and 18 TDs in 2022. Rattler reeled off 9 wins with impressive back-to-back victories over the #5 ranked Tennessee Volunteers and #8 ranked Clemson Tigers.

Ultimately, up-and-down play at the QB position hurt the Gamecocks who finished 8-5 on the season, 3rd in the SEC East. Will the Gamecocks continue to gain ground and overtake Clemson for the state's top spot?
